Boomer work retraining a trick of the trade - Hire Imaging Numerous junior colleges are cooperating with nearby organizations to retrain laborers. These connections are an incredible expected asset for boomers and more established specialists to look for some kind of employment they love; and for bosses to discover ability with aptitudes popular. Silver coating for my instructing customer Ben Ben, a more than 50 development worker, saw his industry evaporating. By mid 2009, he was without an occupation and unfit to discover solid job. He explored the market, arranged, sent out focused on resumes. Quite a few things. Nothing full-time in his field emerged. In late 2010, he discovered that a junior college close by was extending to particular employment opportunity instructional courses in association with nearby bosses. He visited the school's profession advocate for some free appraisals. At that point he joined up with map use, examination and translation, information securing, database improvement, and different courses designed for an endorsement in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). A while later, one of his educators (who worked for a nearby urban arranging organization) suggested Ben for an opening with his association. Ben began all day work the following week! Ben profited by a standout amongst other kept insider facts in work retraining: junior colleges. In chatting with customers since Ben's understanding, I understood that couple of think about a junior college as s spot to revive a vocation. Yet, these school-boss connections can be gold mines for the activity searcher. A frequently moderate arrangement Employment searchers regularly keep down on school for money related reasonsâ"absence of pay leaves them reluctant to put resources into costly school programs with no ensured outcomes. Fortunately junior college educational costs normal $2,700 every yearâ"around one-fifth of that of numerous private or revenue driven schools. Adaptable booking (on the web, evenings, ends of the week) permits understudies to work low maintenance while considering. Even better, junior colleges can offer a network. In a meeting with AARP Magazine, Norma Kent, a senior VP of the American Association of Community Colleges, speaking to 1,200 schools, says, We offer a help arrangement of evaluation, vocation advising, and work position. We don't set you in a place to fall flat. Obviously, request can shift by area. What's extraordinary about the junior college approach is that schools are redoing preparing declaration projects to meet nearby organizations' remarkable needs. It's a success win situation The situation is a success win for bosses and employment searchers. Back to the school that Ben joined in. The program content was created related to include from nearby, local and national GIS experts, and was custom fitted to plan people with the specialized aptitudes and certainty to be beneficial inside the expert GIS working condition. Teachers originated from neighborhood organizations. These organizations likewise coordinated nearby visits into the learning. They additionally employed intensely from the program. The new ability on the neighborhood scene was presently obviously coordinated to require! Remember that while junior college testament projects can assist you with finding an occupation quicker, they are not generally the more lucrative employments. All things considered, a portion of the better-paying positions do require more educational time and cost more. Be that as it may, many occupation searchers have utilized the retraining to get their feet in the entryway; and afterward seek after extra instruction (regularly repaid by their bosses) to meet all requirements for more lucrative positions. Ben plans to climb the stepping stool since he's handled a full-time position where there is space to develop. To find a junior college in your general vicinity, look at the site of the American Association of Community Colleges at aacc.nche.edu/pages/ccfinder.aspx. You may think that its supportive to make an in-person arrangement to meet with a lifelong agent to talk about a likely fit for you. How to Pass the 6-Second Resume Test
The most effective method to Pass the 6-Second Resume Test The most effective method to Pass the 6-Second Resume Test The most effective method to Pass the 6-Second Resume Test Ensure your resume is getting the scout's consideration for quite a few reasons. We'll give you how. Studies have demonstrated that the normal selection representative sweeps a resume for six seconds before choosing if the candidate is a solid match for the job. At the end of the day, to finish the resume assessment, your resume just has six seconds to establish the correct connection with a forthcoming manager. Subsequently, it's imperative to make it as simple as workable for the peruser to skim and recognize your most significant selling focuses. Think about the top third of your resume to be a preview; in this area, incorporate everything the peruser has to know and comprehend about your activity objectives, capabilities, and how to connect with you in the event that they're keen on your application. Underneath I've recorded various components each expert ought to consider while creating their resumeand recounting to their profession story. These basic components can assist you with finishing the six-second resume assessment. Your name Incorporate your name at the head of your resume, as it shows up on your LinkedIn profile and other quest for new employment materials. Regardless of whether you like to pass by Bob or Robert, that is your right simply ensure you're predictable. On the off chance that you have an exceptionally basic name, you might need to remember your center introductory for your expert name to help recognize you from the few other Sarah Johnsons in the more prominent New York City zone. Accreditations On the off chance that you have an affirmation or propelled degree that is viewed as important in your profession, for example, a RN, MBA, or PMP, incorporate it after your name. For example, I will in general use Amanda Augustine, CPCC CPRW on my own marking materials on the grounds that these affirmations show my mastery in profession training and resume composing. There's no motivation to incorporate the initials for your college degree or an accreditation that is not pertinent to your present place of employment objectives. You might be asking: why incorporate this data at the top? In what capacity will this assistance my resume finish the resume assessment? Won't the scout read about my training in that area of my resume? Indeed and no. While enrollment specialists are watching out for insights regarding your qualifications truth be told, it's one of the best six things they center around during their underlying audit they additionally will in general sweep the resume rapidly. By opening with the abbreviations at the head of the resume, you're guaranteeing the enrollment specialist doesn't coincidentally ignore one of your selling focuses. Contact data Incorporate your cell phone number and an email address you've assigned for your pursuit of employment. In the event that you haven't set up your telephone to get voice messages or recorded a voice message welcoming, add this to your rundown of to-do things. While choosing your email address, I suggest making one on a stage like Gmail that consolidates your expert name and is committed to quest for new employment and systems administration exercises. This will assist you with keeping your pursuit of employment sorted out and maintain a strategic distance from and any age separation assumptions that regularly are related with obsolete messages, for example, a comcast.net or optonline.net. It's not, at this point important to incorporate your full postage information at the head of your resume. Rather, share the city, state, and postal division in case you're looking for an occupation near and dear, or expel area data in case you're keen on moving for work. Supporting media While the resume will in general be a straightforward sort of record, there are approaches to give bosses a superior feeling of your character, inventiveness, and topic skill. This is the place the enchantment of hyperlinks starts. Beneath or contiguous the contact data in your header, incorporate connects to sites that shed some light on these zones of your expert image. For example, it's presently typical to incorporate the URL to your LinkedIn profile (Hint: If you haven't made one yet, presently's the time.) In case you're going after a job that includes working with web based life, you may incorporate connects to your own online networking accounts too. This is likewise an incredible spot to share the connection to your online portfolio (for those in innovative fields) or your own blog (for journalists and topic specialists). An expression of alert, however: If you mean to incorporate a connect to any of these assets, ensure you're routinely refreshing the data and that the substance bolsters your expert image and present place of employment objectives. For instance, there's no compelling reason to incorporate a connect to your blog about ball in case you're going after corporate money jobs. Headers All the areas I referenced above ought to be remembered for the top bit of your resume. Notwithstanding, don't embed this data into the genuine header bit of the Word report. This can get mixed by the candidate following frameworks (ATS for short) and create turmoil for the enrollment specialist. It might even reason your resume to not breeze through the ATS continue assessment. Rather, decline your top edge on the record to 0.5 inches and spot your name, contact data, and hyperlinks at the head of the page. On the off chance that your resume is more than one page long, reach data is rehashed at the head of the ensuing pages. You don't need the selection representative to need to chase for your telephone number or email address in the event that they're prepared to talk with you. Proficient title At the point when somebody investigates your resume to check whether you finish the assessment, there ought to be no doubt concerning the kind of job you're focusing in your pursuit of employment. Very frequently I hear customers grumble that they aren't accepting the sort of occupation drives that they need, regardless of whether they've been singular supporters for a long time and are right now looking for an administration position, or they need to come back to a field they worked in quite a while prior however just get offers for work that associates with their latest experience. To help cure this circumstance, and guarantee your resume finishes the resume assessment, make your activity objectives perfectly clear, beginning with the top third of your resume. Incorporate an expert title that expresses your plan. For example, you may put Senior Financial Planning Analysis Professional, Global Business Development Executive, or Entry-Level Marketing Professional, contingent upon your degree of experience and target job. If you don't mind note that these example titles show the expert's activity objectives without getting excessively explicit. This makes it simpler in case you're applying to a couple of various kinds of jobs inside a similar field. In the event that your activity objectives are exceptionally exact, you can make it a stride further and incorporate extra data. Test continue proficient title Here's a case of a resume proficient title for a customer who works in correspondences and represents considerable authority in a specific area of the market: SENIOR COMMUNICATIONS PROFESSIONAL Medicinal services Pharmaceuticals OTC Health There's no uncertainty that this expert is searching for an interchanges job inside the human services part. Investigate the head of your resume and ensure there's an expert title at the top that expresses your activity objectives. Proficient synopsis In the wake of posting your expert title, so as to finish the resume assessment, you have to back it up with supporting data. Believe this segment to be the lift pitch of your resume. In a short passage (3-5 lines), answer the accompanying inquiries: For what reason would you say you are equipped for this sort of position? Shouldn't something be said about your experience, training, and aptitudes make you a decent possibility for this sort of job? Above all, how have you utilized these capabilities to offer some benefit to your past businesses? This section is typically alluded to as your resume's proficient or official outline. Center skills You'd expect that the individual auditing your employment form must have a decent comprehension of your field and the position they're assisting with filling, isn't that so? Wrong. Sadly, the initial scarcely any surveys of your resume will probably be led by a bit of apparatus, known as a candidate following framework (ATS), and a lesser level sourcer or HR organizer. To help move beyond these underlying guardians and breeze through the ATS continue assessment, it's significant that your resume join various key expressions and terms that sum up your mastery. That is the place the center capabilities area becomes possibly the most important factor. Just beneath your expert rundown, incorporate a couple of segments or lines of terms that give the peruser a decent feeling of your subject matters. A simple method to reveal this data is by exploring sets of responsibilities that intrigue you and observing the terms that routinely spring up on these activity postings. You can likewise reorder various sets of expectations into a Word Cloud generator, for example, Wordle, to distinguish the most as often as possible referenced terms. Featured accomplishments On the off chance that you've been in the workforce for at least 15 years, you might need to incorporate a featured accomplishments area. This fragment is normally positioned just underneath the center abilities area or more your expert history. In it, you list three to five shots that feature accomplishments you consider to be particularly vital and applicable to your objective employment. On the off chance that a portion of your best awards fall on the second page of your resume, this is a decent method to give them exceptional consideration inside your resume preview. The companion test When you look at the head of your resume, are your activity objectives and capabilities self-evident? In case you're uncertain, hand your resume over to a companion. It really helps if this individual isn't in your profession. Ask them to rapidly filter your resume for close to 30 seconds this is longer than the normal scout takes. In the event that they can only with significant effort distinguish your activity objectives and capabilities, at that point you realize it won't breeze through a resume assessment there's still work to be finished. Not certain if your resume is fit as a fiddle to beat the 6-second test? TopResume can enable your resume to go without a hitch. Find out additional. Suggested Reading: The

FTs MBA Ranking Represents Everything Wrong with Business
FT's MBA Ranking 'Speaks to Everything Wrong with Business FT's MBA Ranking 'Speaks to Everything Wrong with Business Bruce Nussbaum, a notable essayist on development and configuration, is annoyed with the Financial Times worldwide business college rankings. Everything amiss with business colleges todaythe ravenousness, the blinkered vision, the failure to changehe composes, gets approval in FTs late Global MBA Ranking. The schools that graduated the MBAs who went into banking and Wall Street to compose the content for the staggering Great Recession of 20072009 are still at the top. The schools that graduated administrators who demonstrated absolutely unfit to advance are still at the top. The schools that gave Master of Nonprofit Administration degrees to individuals who proceeded to become CEOs and neglected to convey an incentive for as long as decade estimated by stock cost are still at the top.The FT rundown of the best MBA programs is a demonstration of the wastefulness of business sectors and the failure of business colleges to change their educational programs, educators and showing techniqu es regardless of the ascent of gigantic multifaceted nature and vulnerability in the worldwide economy. Why havent business colleges really dedicated to innovativeness been compensated? In the event that CEOs around the globe recognize development and imagination as the ways to brilliance in this, as he says, intricate and dubious worldwide economy, shouldnt the MBA rankings strategy change in like manner to a moving paradigm?Nussbaum positively thinks so (as do I). He shakes his clench hand at the absence of quality, at the highest point of the positions, of more schools like Carnegie Mellons Tepper School (positioned at 41), which has been spanning the holes between business, structure and designing for longer than 10 years. He additionally takes note of the low-ish arrangement of schools like Berkeleys Haas (25) and Northwesterns Kellogg (21), the two schools that have made significant educational plan changes, and which make a solid effort to discover and develop understudies and workforce committed to finding unique responses to new issues. Along these lines, while Stanford positions fourth, and the dynamic Yale SOM, with its interdisciplinary and CSR-disapproved of approach, comes in at 15, in the event that the procedure doesnt figure advancement or innovativeness its computations, at that point what does it matter?Innovation and imagination arent effectively quantifiable, sure. In any case, given that FTs philosophy is so erratic as of now, (John Byrne, of Poets Quants, has said about FTs positioning: No positioning of MBA programs is without blemishes, yet the Financial Times system is particularly curious among the most mainstream rankings of business colleges.) Im sure theres an approach to figure advancement or inventiveness one or a considerable lot of the current metrics. As we know, MBA candidates, and candidates by and large, regularly look to rankings as the first and principle source in framing a rundown of schools to apply to. In the event tha t administration chiefs have been stating more than once that what they need right presently is to enlist imaginative ability, that its a top need, at that point the business colleges best prepared to notice their calls ought to be given that acknowledgment. Also, since the rankings, shockingly, give that acknowledgment, it just bodes well for the FT positioning to make a change.[Change Observer]

Things You Should Do If Youre Worried Youre About to Get Fired
Things You Should Do If You're Worried You're About to Get Fired More often than not youre covered in your work, endeavoring to get to the base of a long daily agenda. Your day by day exertion is centered around accomplishing our best work. You need to progress admirably. You need to excel. In any case, at some point, you start to see that things are unique. You will be unable to place whats changed, yet there are some inconspicuous things going on that are causing you uneasiness. You ask yourself, Is it conceivable that Im going to be terminated? When that question flies into your brain, you may promptly excuse it, yet then you find that you cannot disregard it and you start to search for proof this might be valid. On the off chance that you have a sneaking doubt that you may be at risk for getting terminated, here are five signs to pay special mind to: 1. Your bosss conduct towards you has changed. Perhaps you never had a heavenly relationship with your chief, yet you cannot help yet see that now he/she has gotten increasingly far off. No eye to eye connection. You infrequently even get the welcoming great morning that you used to hear. He/she doesnt draw close to your office or work area and no longer asks you inquiries or needs to know your assessment. Youve become undetectable. This evasion is commonplace when somebody has something they dont need to examine with you. They figure in the event that they stay away from you, you wont have the option to ask them any inquiries. 2. Youre not welcome to gatherings. Previously, you would be welcome to numerous gatherings in your area of expertise and all inclusive. Presently you notice that however the gatherings proceed, you are no longer requested to join in. At the point when you inquire as to why, the reactions are dubious. Nobody will offer you a reasonable response. They may react that they were given the rundown of invitees by another person and have no clue why you havent been welcomed. Another sign that youre getting undetectable. 3. Youre no longer on the email chain. Already, you have been replicated on messages that have circled over your specialization or organization. Who took you off the rundown? Nobody appears to know or recognize its an issue. 4. You have less obligations and no new ventures. You were constantly approached to prepare the new individual in the office and now your associate is doing it. You arent getting any new activities, simply bustling work that comes up short on any kind of cutoff time or significance. At the point when you ask about new tasks and for what valid reason you currently have less to do, you never find a straight solution. 5. Your supervisor goes legitimately to your immediate reports and evades you. This is a reasonable sign that you are not, at this point thought about important. When your immediate reports need to answer legitimately to your chief, you are good and gone. Face it. What would you be able to do about this? 1. To begin with, set up a gathering with your chief and pose significant inquiries head on. They may attempt to dodge you however consider them responsible for planning a gathering and pose direct inquiries about whats going on. It might be awkward for both of you, yet its greatly improved to discover whats going on than stay in obscurity. 2. Set up a gathering with HR. Impart your interests and look for guidance on the most proficient method to push ahead. 3. Contact confided in partners for data. Right now is an ideal opportunity to ask any partners you may have about what they may have caught wind of you and your position. 4. Connect with your outer system and start to search for new chances. Regardless of whether you arent quickly going to be given up, none of these unpretentious signs work in support of you. You need to be in an association where you can grandstand your aptitudes. 5. Put a rundown of your achievements together and chip away at your resume. Be proactive and discover an organization that will bolster your earnest attempts to be effective. Its in every case better to be proactive and search for an occupation when you have an occupation! - Bonnie Marcus, M.Ed, is an official mentor, creator and keynote speaker concentrated on ladies' progression in the working environment. An Insiders Look at Professional Consulting in Israel
An Insider's Look at Professional Consulting in Israel 4 Thinking of becoming a pro consultant Israeli-style? Here's what you'll want to know about consulting in Israel. This is a guest post by the consultant blogger of Consulting: the Internship of Life (Hebrew). That's not him in the photo, by the way. If youâd also like to guest post here on JobMob, follow these guest post guidelines. What is âIsraeli Consultingâ? Is it any different from regular âWorld Wide Consultingâ? 4 attributes of professional consulting in Israel Based on my years in the consulting industry and the many times I've worked with clients abroad or locally, these are the qualities that make the consultant an Israeli one.eval 1) Many contact people On my first consulting mission, I was impressed by the number of interfacing points we had with the client company. We started with the CEO or one of his vice-presidents, went to talk with middle management and then sat down and drank coffee with the assembly line workers. You had to know how to reach out to each person to get the information you needed and establish a good working environment. Incidentally, there's nothing like first doing a company tour with the CEO to meet the employees.eval 2) A lot of office politics Want to work on the more interesting projects? You'd better become friends with the project managers in charge of those client accounts so that they'll pull you in to work with them. Had an argument with a senior consultant? It will be the last time you get to join a project with them in charge. Sounds worse than it is, but the amount of politics never stops to amaze me. 3) High level of commitment Let me illustrate with an example. Once, when a major milestone was due, we stayed extra hours, ordered pizzas and brainstormed through the night to finish on time. And it wasn't just the junior consultants that made the effort, it was the entire project team. 4) Friendly work relations A final attribute of the Israeli consulting company is the comradeship among the consultants themselves. We stay late at work, go out together and meet again the morning after. Even as the years pass, we stay friends and make it a habit to meet regularly e.g. every Thursday to close the week with a shot of whisky. Conclusion The Israeli consulting experience is an enriching one where you can learn about all kinds of fields from supply chain management to marketing strategy, how to use the laptop as a third hand and Microsoft Excel as a third eye. With the insight above, you'll be entering an exciting industry with your eyes open. And if you're wondering where to find consulting jobs in Israel, the above consultant blogged about that too (Hebrew). Ready to consult?

How to Conquer Fear and Self-Doubt - Classy Career Girl
How to Conquer Fear and Self-Doubt Fear is a healthy thing. Itâs what kept us from being eaten by tigers in early centuries, and it keeps you from doing triple back flips off bridges because you want to be twenty bucks richer. However, most of us donât even realize that we shut down endless ideas, dreams, passions and desires on a semi-conscious level, all because of fear. So how about taking a big magnifying glass and looking our fears in the eye? Shall we begin? How to Conquer Fear, Self-Doubt and What Other People Think Internal Fear â" âI canât do this.â This fear comes in a range of forms (which I go into even greater detail on in my book, so check it out!), but it can usually be broken into two main parts. 1. âIâm not good enough.â I could go on about this forever, but hereâs a hard and fast reality check to counter this fear: No one is good enough. There is no âgood enough,â there is simply âgood.â Youâre good right now, but by diminishing our accomplishments and not acknowledging our achievements, we often times ignore our true potential. Without potential, we truly are unable to take on our dreams â" but you have potential! You just need to stop ignoring it. This means you need to start showing gratitude. Show appreciation of what youâve done. Every day, sit down and list five things you did well. Donât let the fear downgrade your accomplishments by saying âoh, someone else could have done it better,â but instead force yourself to say, âI did a really great job on this today, I am proud of myself.â Youâll find after doing that for a few days, this fear will slowly start to recede, letting you take on more tasks and gain yourself more cool points! 2. Itâs not Common Sense (aka, âwhat if it fails miserably?â). A career makeover can be terrifying, mainly because of the thought: âWhat if my attempt fails? What if I my dream doesnât bring me a steady job? Itâs not Common Sense to pursue something that wonât carry me to retirement or give me a steady wage, right?â In the time of our parents, getting a job right out of school, holding that job your entire life (whether you liked it or not), getting good wages, retiring well and then spending the rest of your life drinking canned beer and telling stories⦠that was the ideal life. Settling down with a career as soon as possible and then keeping it until retirement was Common Sense. Completely remaking your career would be the exact opposite of Common Sense, right? Wrong. Job security is absolutely a thing of the past. Modern technology allows people to have access to opportunities like never before, and it has even created jobs which could never have existed before. Common Sense has since evolved with the modern generation to have a new definition: itâs creativity, flexibility, and the courage to try something new. There may be some financial insecurity, there may be some rocky times in between jobs, and there may be a lot of âswing and missesâ in achieving your goal. In todayâs age, you have just as great a chance of achieving it, if not a better chance! So go for it! External Fear â" âWhat will others think?â Internal fear is arguably the worst, since the insidious monster of doubt can pitch up a tent in your brain and stay for a while. Yet external can sometimes be even harsher than internal; theyâre real-life and in your face when you go to that dinner party or hang out with your family. This fear could be broken into a million forms, but thereâs one main source: What will everyone else think? Any internal arguments and doubts you have are likely ones that have been voiced by others. âWhy not get a steady job? Why take the risk? Why would you want that career?â Hereâs the thing, though: There will always be people who donât understand. ALWAYS. You need to take comfort in the fact that there are countless people who understand exactly what youâre going through. Ready for more? Those who make arguments about how itâs not âCommon Sense,â want it too â" they want to pursue a more passionate and full life â" theyâre just letting fear hold them back. Donât let their fear bog you down! Dont be that girl, the one who always had BIG dreams but was always too scared to follow them!

Find Love Dating Sites To Check Out in 2019
Find Love Dating Sites To Check Out in 2019 Online dating services are websites and applications that help to connect people who are looking for a physical, personal, and romantic relationship. Through in-depth questionnaires, pictures, and profile information that describe a persons personality or character, the sites help users find their âbetter halves. With options now available for gender specific, executive-level, and even interracial dating sites, anyone can use online dating websites. These sites, however, turn out to be more useful to people who are either new to an area, those who are too occupied with work or family, or those whose situations make it hard to meet people the traditional way. Such sites are also fit for people who arent willing to deal with the guesswork of going on blind dates. These dating sites help users know the chemistry and similar interests before they start dating. Factors to Consider When Choosing a Dating Site Choosing a good and reputable online dating site is easier said than done. Below are a few pointers you may have to pay attention to before selecting a dating site: Price While most dating apps are free, there are some that may require membership payment. Its important to decide whether you want to pay for access. You should, however, not assume that paid services are better in quality than the unpaid ones. Several free dating sites have attained really high scores in user satisfaction. Communication The kind of interaction you have on a dating site will determine how satisfied youll be with the site. A good dating site is one that will match your expectations regarding communication. There are sites such as OKCupid, where anybody can send you messages. On others, such as Tinder or Bumble, you can only communicate with people youâve matched with. Security Meeting a new person, whether online or one-on-one, can be both exciting and dangerous. Its important to choose a site that allows you to limit your profiles visibility to avoid scams. Creating a profile on online dating sites is really easy. Therefore, anyone can create a new identity within seconds, and you may not be able to determine if the profiles are real or not. Below are some of the best dating sites that will take over come next year: OkCupid OkCupid is among the most popular dating sites. Candidate Screening Dashing Through the Maze
Candidate Screening Dashing Through the Maze Part One Weâve all been candidates at one stage. Its a rite of passage. If you are not one of the lucky few who have been offered a position through a family member or friend, youâve probably submitted a CV online through a job board or applied through a company website. At this stage youâve entered a labyrinth of twists and turns and sometimes a pit of despair, and so find yourself asking Is my application being looked at? Do people care? Why did I never receive a call? Why is my self-worth so horribly damaged by all of this? The Desktop Screening Process From a corporate recruiters perspective, (whom average around 30-40 open positions at a time), the first sweep is a ruthless cull (Donât worry, its not you; its what youâve done and what you know). Recruiters will catch the first glance of your application in their inbox or more likely an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) which may sound like a new terminator model, but itâs what we recruiters use to maintain control over what cannot be controlled; the hiring process. The âsystemâ even rates you; thatâs right, in many large organizations the software makes the decision for recruiters and your CV is put through a funnel, reducing the number of applications from 100+ to often around 10 based on keywords and questions. Thatâs the start. Smart recruiters will double check the original list of applications on the off-chance a hidden gem is concealed amongst the masses; if not, you have probably already been sent an automated decline email which seems impersonal because it is. In an ideal world, a recruiter will talk you through the whyâs and whereforeâs but with time pressures, it is often not possible. Again, practices differ but if your CV shows promise in other areas you are then added to what is called a ââpipelineââ or ââtalent poolââ for future consideration. Ultimately, if you pass this stage youâve done well when you consider the sheer volume of applications. If the recruiter called you instead â" itâs because the role is confidential OR they simply have had no response from advertising. Take it as a compliment. Whether this part of the process remains as key as it is today shall likely be revealed over time and with automation and job aggregator capability in mind. Talent Acquisition leaders talk of âtalent poolsâ (a pool of talent: often a folder on a desktop or in rare circumstances a real-time database of validated and available talent) to bring down âcycle-timeâ (how long it takes to hire someone), but in reality many teams still cannot get this right due to the time and resource investment. Regardless, every new role is an opportunity to get the brand out there, generate interest and excite more people so for now, enjoy the ride. Iâve rarely seen candidates talk their way from a decline email into what is known as the long-list, but donât be disheartened. Itâs happened to the best of us. The Phone Screen This call is almost certainly one of the most overlooked parts of your journey, predominantly because people are caught off-guard almost every time. Why? Because it is unexpected. An appointment has not been made, you have not had time to prepare and suddenly a hand shoots out of the maze wall and hands you a receiver. Iâve declined many applications at this point based on what may seem to candidates, to simply be a delightful exchange of words, and hereâs why: If youâve applied for a position with the company I represent but have no recollection of the event, that tells me all I need to know about your attention to detail, level of interest and personal administration skills. You donât have to take the call because your phone is ringing⦠particularly not whilst answering the call of nature or consuming a meal that allows only a grunt in response. If youâve made it to phone screen you will almost undoubtedly be called back, perhaps let this one go. If you simply cannot resist the urge, then answer and offer to call back in an hour from a more quiet location. Recruiters are phone ââexpertsââ. We spend an inordinate amount of time interviewing, talking and listening. Youâd be surprised what a voice can give away. Not only are we listening to your words, but the inflections in your voice, your volume, your breathing, whatâs happening around you etc. The point of this call which can easily fall within the bracket of a pseudo first interview is to clarify a few items with candidates. We use it to double-check any gaps in work history and more often than not, discover salary expectations and availability. As with any step of the process, its make or break. Youâre either going to stumble over your words and replay the conversation over in your head for an eternity or nail it and make the list of individuals being put in front of hiring managers. Its an important conversation so treat is as such. Part Two takes you deeper into the often murky depths of the process and the climactic interview, negotiation and hire⦠Author: The âAcquirerâ â" No small dose of healthy HR skepticism. A career in Talent Acquisition leadership in global companies from the heat of the Asia Pacific to the crisp air of Europe. Pragmatic, strategic, and every now and again⦠serious.

Surviving a Resource Action - A Different Perspective - Career Pivot
Surviving a Resource Action - A Different Perspective - Career Pivot Surviving a Resource Action I have two clients who are surviving a resource action from a major employer. One had her position eliminated, and one was moved to a new position within the organization. Lots of similar emotions for both of them! They are both relieved that the long-awaited resource action has happened. Weeks ago, the company announced that the changes were coming, so it became like working in an intensive care ward. Everyone was waiting to see who would dieâ¦I mean, get laid off, and who would recoverâ¦keep their jobs. Grief and Sorrow There were grief and sorrow for both of them. My client, who was adversely affected by theresource action, wondered âwhy was I laid off when there were others less worthy could have been?â My client, that survived theresource actionwondered âwhy was I selected to stay when there were more worthy people who were laid off?â Some of it was being in the wrong place at the wrong time and being in the right place at the right time. (More: Resource Action â" It is not about you) Who is better off? In this case, I believe it is my client who was adversely affected by the resource action â" i.e. laid off! WOW really? This was the third resource action that she had experienced, and the second where she was actually laid off. After the first resource action she experienced, she found a new position at the last moment. She knows what to do! Listen to the most recent episode Visited her financial adviser to get the facts. She discovered was she was in good shape and could go two years without working. Visited an employment lawyer. She had a number concerns about how her retirement was being handled. It felt good that she was covering all of the bases. Applied for another credit card. When you are out of work, cash is king. Having additional credit lines, even if you do not use or need them, is valuable. Set up an L.L.C. or Limited Liability Corporation. I have told her I do not want her to work full time again this year. She needs to recover from the stress of working in a toxic work environment. Having an L.L.C. allows her to perform freelance work and write off equipment purchases (new computer) that she would have bought anyway. This also allows her to date companies where she might want to work. (More: 7 Positive steps to take after being affected by a resource action) Who is worse off? In my humble opinion, those left behind are often the worse off. Workloads do not decrease but are spread across fewer people. Will this be the last resource action? NO! In 2003, I worked for Agere Systems, a spin-off from Lucent. We had small resource actions just about every month. I called this theChinese Water Torture of resource actionsâ"dripâ¦dripâ¦drip⦠I was on one of the teams that ranked employees. UGH! That is something I never want to experience again. I volunteered for a resource action at the end of 2003. I have never regretted that decision. She is now motivated not to wait for the next resource action. She knows that she is living on borrowed time and needs to move to her next position on her own schedule and not that of her employer. Everyone is affected by a resource action. Some are more affected than others, and they may not realize it at the time. Have you been affected by a resource action? Who was worse off? Those who were laid off or those who stayed?
